Man Found Dead After Fire Breaks Out At Medford Homeless Encampment (Update)

Local and state officials are investigating after a person died from a fire in Medford, authorities said.

Medford Fire responded to the area of 295 Middlesex Avenue, behind the old Crunch Fitness, around 5:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 30, according to State Fire Marshal Peter Ostroskey. Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy fire coming from a wooded area behind the building. 

Firefighters also found an adult male who was dead inside the debris of what appeared to be a homeless encampment, Ostroskey added. The man's body was taken by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner which will determine his cause of death and reveal his identity. 

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
